When bringing a puppy or an adult dog home, it’s better to stay at home full time and show the pet where to sleep, eat, relieve itself and so forth. Puppies need several months of housetraining, but adults adapt easily to the new environment. It’s much easier to prevent misbehavior than correct bad habits. Obedience training should be started after the dog settles in the new environment. Mutts and dogs with unknown background adopted from a rescue or shelter may bring a few more problems than purebreds with a more favorable history, but the rewards can be great.
